A little bit of roller shutter history for the geeks

Updated: Sep 1, 2023

The roller shutter as we know it today dates back to the 1970s, but its predecessor had a much earlier beginning. In 1st century AD Egypt, there was an engineer with great mathematical skills named Heron of Alexandria. This Greco-Egyptian inventor is called "the researcher of antiquity" and is said to be among the first researchers in the field of cybernetics. His interest in automation led him to design one of the first automatic doors, an incredible invention for the time. The Heron Gate is steam operated and operated using a gravity and water pressure system. It is at the entrance of the holy temple. A priest lit the altar fire which was connected to a pipe hidden under the door. The fire will heat the pot of water, creating steam that will transfer the water into another container. It will act as a counterweight that will lift the heavy door, opening it immediately. Visitors to the temple enter and are amazed at the "magic" door that opens without anyone wanting to touch them. Heron's Gate was never built, but its design was well ahead of its time. It laid the foundation for future designers to create similar devices.

Entering 15th century England, wooden shutters began to appear across the country. These outdoor window coverings are an effective way to keep the cold out during the winter, and they provide additional protection for the home at night.

Made of wood, they are cheaper than glass and easier to build

Fast forward to 1882 in the Swiss town of Aadorf. A man named Anton Greisser filed a patent for a new type of door: the metal shutter. Greisser creates a workshop where he designs and manufactures wood veneers. This will ultimately protect local homes and businesses. Greisser's successful business remains today. Manufacture of shutters, brise-soleil, facade blinds and Venetian blinds in many European factories. However, despite the success of Greisser's country, the modern mask gained popularity for a short time.

At the beginning of the 20th century, war broke out across Europe. Common people are eager to protect their businesses from looters and vandals, hence the demand for roller blinds is on the rise. Businesses are quickly capitalizing on this new market, with many entrepreneurs setting up businesses to manufacture roller blinds. Suddenly, in 1926, a man named CG Johnson invented a method to open garage doors. This "up & over" method is still used today. It has been optimized for use with residential garages, making it easy to work with.

Roller shutters became popular in the following years, and their use became widespread in Europe and the United States. In the 1970s, the Western world was hit hard by an energy crisis. People are desperate for ways to save money on their energy bills. Roller shutters provided the perfect solution. As they can protect against the cold and the heat in the summer. This led to a boom in the insurance industry, with new companies springing up to meet the growing demand.

Today, roller shutters are used all over the world, and they are a useful item for many homeowners. They are used to protect homes, businesses, cars and warehouses from the wind. They are an important part of many security systems. Even more useful, they can now be opened and closed automatically, using sensors, key fobs and remote controls.
